Dance is a dynamic form of expression that goes beyond mere movement. It embodies culture, emotion, and identity. At the heart of my journey with Cherie Hill IrieDance lies a unique opportunity to engage with art that not only entertains but also transforms. IrieDance stands out for its mission to create performances that invite audience members to reflect on themselves and their surroundings. Through the lens of black feminist theory and the rich heritage of the African Diaspora, we encouraged people to explore deeper connections with their realities, all while honoring the beauty of nature.

I am continually inspired by the meaning behind "Irie," which signifies harmony and a connection to one's higher self. Our work aimed to evoke powerful emotions, challenge perceptions, and facilitate a journey toward self-discovery.

The Connection Between Dance and Consciousness

Dance is a powerful medium for experiencing and understanding the world. IrieDance performances go beyond traditional choreography. Each piece is crafted to engage both the body and the mind.

In 2022, a study revealed that 79% of participants who engaged in dance reported feeling more connected to themselves and their communities. This finding echoes the mission of IrieDance. Our pieces explored themes that blend cosmic beliefs with the realities of everyday life. This exploration is particularly relevant today, as many seek solace amid societal chaos.

Our performances often took place in non-traditional settings and community spaces, enhancing the themes we conveyed. By connecting our movements with nature, we offer audiences a more intimate experience, inviting them to feel the rhythm of both dance and earth in unison.

Movement as a Vessel for Metaphysical Presence

At IrieDance, we believed the body acts as a vessel for higher consciousness. As artistic director, I explored how dance can bridge the physical and metaphysical realms.

In our performances, each dancer brings their personal narrative, transforming the stage into a tapestry of experiences. For instance, during our last show, we showcased the journey of four women from diverse backgrounds, each representing different facets of resilience and strength. This collective storytelling makes the experience resonate on a deeper level, emphasizing the healing power of movement.

Engaging with the Themes of the African Diaspora and Feminism

Our art is deeply connected to the legacy of the African Diaspora. By incorporating black feminist theory, we highlighted the experiences of women and their significant contributions to dance.

Through choreography inspired by our heritage, we challenged societal norms and uplifted marginalized voices. For example, our last performance series incorporated Seeds of Hope, a dance film premiere along with a panel discussion on environmental justice, art, and race. This event highlights conversation with women working at the forefront of ensuring that non-white voices and artistic expression are centered in this critical movement. Moderator: A-lan Holt, Director at the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University, Poet, Writer, Playwright, Filmmaker led the discussion. This approach transforms our work into a dialogue, encouraging audience members to reflect on their realities and the histories that shape us.

Each dance becomes an invitation to explore complex themes. We motivate our audience to ponder their own identities and experiences, sparking conversations that flow long after the performance has ended.

The Importance of Community in Our Work

Community is the cornerstone of IrieDance. We believe dance should be accessible to everyone and can drive meaningful social change. By bringing workshops and performances to local neighborhoods, we connected with community members on a personal level.

Our project in 2021, the Earth Echoes Virtual Gallery, is an exhibition of local artists whose work speaks to the power of black feminism, ecology, and community. The gallery features a dance film by Cherie Hill IrieDance, new works by video and installation artist Imani Karpowich, performance artist Andreina Maldonado, dancer and herbalist Rose Rothfeder, and writer and dancer Lashon Daley.

Looking Ahead: The Transition of Cherie Hill IrieDance

In 2023, I began the process of transitioning IrieDance to concentrate on my work in dance, wellness, and healing. From here, MoveDaSoul and Lotus Cove Enterprises was manifested. I remain committed to IrieDance's mission and will continue exploring dance as a force for positive change in society. Each new project is an opportunity to inspire creativity and action in our community.

In the coming months, I will be leading more Dance and Wellness classes and retreats. Within th enext year, Lotus Cove Enterprises will expand to holding Dance and Wellness workshops overseas. I plan to continue to collaborate with local artists and thought leaders to deepen our reach. I invite you to join me on this journey of exploration and transformation. Engage with my classes, activities, retreats, and performances. Support my initiatives, and let the vibrant energy of dance uplift your spirit, just as it has for countless others.
